My goal is, unsurprisingly, to get more visitors on my blog. I write about some niche topics and some of them perform better than others.
Sometimes I need some inspiration so I open some websites like tinysuggest, google trends or google itself. It's matter of few seconds to get what are the most searched questions.
Example: I start to write "electronic cigarette" and I get something like:
- electronic cigarette pros and cons
- electronic cigarette shop
- electronic cigarette etc. etc.
It's clear what I should be writing about. Then I'll experiment with some long tail titles and I start writing articles.
So my question is: what do you hope to obtain with tools like Keyword Planner? What I get is a rough number saying that "electronic cigarette shop" is being searched more than "electronic cigarette healthy or not". So what? I knew that already, it just takes two minutes of searching and analysing which articles are returned on the first page.
Maybe I'm completely missing the point of keyword research tools everybody find so valuable. What information can we get from these tools we don't know already?!

I completely understand your point. You can get keyword suggestions just through google search results. But the idea of keyword research is more than that.
Say for eg: Say, if you're writing a blog about "healthy office snacks", you assume yourself from Google autosuggest that this is the main keyword. But when you use keyword tools, you can come across other relevant keywords on this topic like "employee wellness ideas". That's the power of keyword research. You can find synonyms, topics or other words the people relate to. We need to write for users, instead of writing for us.Related:GroupBuy SEO Tools
Did you know, electronic cigarettes are also searched as "e-cigarettes" or it falls under electronic nicotine delivery systems. And did you know what features people search for in an e-cigarette - rechargeable, disposable, safety, risk assessment and so on? Keyword research gives you an overall idea of what it is, how people search for it, what topic does it falls under, what are its benefits and so on. Hope you understand my point.
